Prisoners go hungry as Jhapa jail fails to provide rice; telephone also not working

Detainees inside Jhapa District Jail have nothing to eat of their own due to lack of budget, RSS reports

Though jailbirds are entitled to receive Rs. 45 per days, budget deficit has hit them hard.

At present, the prison management has distributed rice to detainees by bringing the food stuffs on credit.

The rule is it that the prison has to provide the cash and 700 grams of rice every day to the prisoner for their subsistence.

The government-allocated budget of Rs. 12 million has been already spent in the current fiscal year, said Prison In-charge Khagendra Giri.

Even the telephone line of the prison has been cut off due to the lack of budget.

Telephone service has been out of gear for the past one month for not clearing the dues of Rs. 50,000, Giri said.

'There are altogether 547 detainees in the prison and only nine toilets have been arranged for the drove , he further informed, adding that it has increased the chances of infection of various disease among the prisoners. nepalnews.com
