UCPN (M), Madhesi Front discuss statute issues

The ruling partners, UCPN (Maoist) and Madhesi Front, met Wednesday to discuss the possibility of maintaining a common position on the contentious subjects of the constitution, especially the form of governance and restructuring of the state.

The two sides have reached 'tentative understanding' on directly elected President who will share executive powers with the Prime Minister elected from the parliament. However, they could not decide on the modality of distribution of power to the President and the Prime Minister.

The UCPN (M) wants more rights for the directly elected President while the Front has been advocating for limited rights for the President.

Leaders said they also discussed the state restructuring, and the election system focusing particularly on how to make the elections more proportionally represented, but there was no concrete agreement.

The ruling allies met ahead of the a joint meeting of the major parties. nepalnews.com
