NEFIN calls off general strike in Terai after govt declares Tharu martyr

Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN), the umbrella organisation of various indigenous nationalities in the country, has withdrawn all protest programs on Friday following the government’s decision to declare Dhan Bahadur Thanet Tharu martyr and provide Rs 1 million compensation to his family.

Raj Kumar Lekhi, chaiman of NEFIN, welcomed Thursday’s Cabinet decision and called off all agitation programs of NEFIN including general strikes in Terai.

Tharu, who was injured in police firing during a demonstration in Danda, Nawalparasi on May 9, died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

NEFIN had enforced general strike in various Terai districts on Thursday to exert pressure on the government to award martyr status to Tharu and provide compensation to his family. Nepalnews.com
