Voting on contentious issues of constitution to begin in CA from Thursday

Political parties have agreed to carry out voting in the Constituent Assembly to resolve the disputed issues of constitution drafting from Thursday.

Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai...

A meeting of the Constitutional Committee, which is mandated to prepare the draft of the constitution, took a decision to this effect Wednesday morning after endorsing similar agreement reached between the leaders of the major political parties at the Dispute Resolution Sub-Committee’s (DRSC) meeting.

As per today’s agreement, voting on the contentious topics - federalism and forms of governance – seen in constitution will be carried out at the full House of the Constituent Assembly scheduled to be held at 3 pm.

Concurrently, the political parties also agreed to continue discussions to forge consensus on the disputed issues.

The meeting of the DRSC held earlier today morning had recommended to go ahead with voting in the Constituent Assembly to settle the disputed issues related to the constitution drafting.

Emerging from the meeting, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is the chairman of DRSC, said that the decision was taken as they failed to arrive at a consensus despite holding numbers of meetings to settle the disputed issues related to federalism and forms of governance.

“Till now, the responsibility to resolve the differences seen in constitution drafting solely rested on the shoulders of the major political parties. With the decision to carry out voting on the disputed issues of constitution drafting at the CA, the responsibility has now come on the shoulders of all 601 members of the Constituent Assembly,” Dahal said. nepalnews.com
