Production of food grain increases
The country's production of major food grains is expected to go up by nearly 10 percent during the fiscal year 2011/12 due to favourable weather and improved seeds, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MoAC).
The total grain production is expected to increase by 9.77 percent to 9.45 million tonnes this fiscal year while the same was 8.61 million tonnes last fiscal year.
The production of paddy, maize, wheat, millet, barley, and buckwheat are expected to soar by 13.72 percent, 5.41 percent, 5.7 percent, 4.08
percent, 14.9 percent, and 13.34 percent, respectively.
As per the expectation, the production of paddy would go up to over 5.07 million tonnes, maize 2.17 million tonnes, wheat 1.84 million tonnes, millet 315,067 tonnes, barley 34,736 tonnes, and buckwheat 10,021 tonnes this fiscal year.
Similarly, the production of paddy stood at 4.44 million tonnes, maize 2.06 million tonnes, wheat 1.74 million tonnes, millet 302,691 tonnes,
