DPM Sitaula, Minister Gurung hand over their resignation to their party president
Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Minister for Federal Affairs Surya Man Gurung resigned from their Cabinet post on Thursday morning after their party Nepali Congress expressed serious objection towards government’s decision to extend the Constituent Assembly’s term by three more months.
DPM Sitaula, who was leading a two-member NC team as Defense and Law minister also, and Minister Gurung tendered their resignation to NC party president Sushil Koirala this morning.
Their resignation will be formalised once the prime minister approves it.
The two ministers tendered their resignation after it became certain that NC will recall its ministers from the Bhattarai-led “national unity” government today.
On Tuesday, Situala had registered an amendment bill in the parliament seeking a three-month term extension of the CA after the cabinet decided to extend CA’s term concluding that it was not possible to promulgate new constitution by May 27 deadline given the ongoing debate on federalism.
However, NC (of which Situala is general secretary) rejected the government’s decision to register constitution amendment bill in the parliament and remained adamant on their previous stance for promulgation of the constitution within the May 27 deadline. nepalnews.com
