At the initiation of the Ministry of Health and Population, the country marks World No Tobacco Day on May 31 every year.

According to the government, tobacco related diseases claim over 15000 lives every year in Nepal. Government estimates also show that 37.1 percent of the people in Nepal are smokers.

Meanwhile, the anti-smoking law that makes smoking in public places illegal is openly violated due to lack of monitoring mechanism. nepalnews.com
