Manbire's killers sentenced to 10 years in prison
The Kalikot District Court has found three persons guilty of murdering a Dalit man in November last year, RSS reported.
The court has sentenced Min Bahadur Shahi, Dip Bahadur Shahi and Jash Bahadur Shahi to 10 years in prison.
The death of the Manbire Sunar, a Dalit from Kalikot, had angered Dalit organisations and Dalit political leaders. Dalit lawmakers had even obstructed successive parliamentary proceedings in protest of the killing. They had said Sunar was beaten to death for trying to entry into the kitchen of the hotel run by a 'upper caste’ person.
However, The Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), a human rights group, has said the death of Manbire Sunar, a Dalit from Kalikot, had died in a drunken brawl and that there was very little proof of any caste sentiment behind the murder. INSEC said Sunar had a quarrel with the trio when they were drinking alcohol in a hotel in Jubitha, Kalikot.
Protests against the murder was called off after the government declared the deceased as 'martyr'. It has also provided Rs 1 million as relief for Manbire’s family. nepalnews.com
