Nepali Congress has termed the government's call to hold fresh election for the Constituent Assembly in April-May as a UCPN (Maoist) ploy to prolong its stay in power.
The government on Tuesday announced fresh Constituent Assembly elections in the month of Baisakh (April-May) next year. Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun presented the budget at a hastily organised ceremony in Singha Durbar Tuesday evening. He delivered the budget speech soon after President Ram Baran Yadav approved the ordinance presented by the government.
"The government's call to conduct elections in April-May is part of the UCPN (M)'s ploy to remain in power," said NC leader Ram Chandra Paudel after an informal meeting of party office bearers in the Capital on Wednesday.
" We (the parties) were inching towards consensus on the budget and elections. The government's unilateral decision was unexpected."
He said that the government cannot unilaterally declare election without putting in place necessary laws and infrastructure.
An 'emergency' meeting of the party has been slated for later on Wednesday. nepalnews.com
