Dalits thrashed on temple premises

Three people from the Dalit community, who were at the local Malika Temple to observe a religious fair organized on the temple premises on the occasion of the Vijaya Dashami festival have been reportedly thrashed by non-dalits and the temple priest, RSS reports.

The victims are Sita BK, 16, Laxmi BK, 14 of Martadi and their kin Dilip Ukheda from Mahementa VDC in Bajhang. They were assaulted by the temple priest and other non-dalits or so-called high caste as they visited the temple at 5:00 pm on the day of the Vijaya Dashami on October 24 to observe the fair.

It is learnt that they fell unconscious in the attack and regained consciousness only today. They are receiving treatment at the District Hospital Martadi in a critical condition.

Different dalit organizations and human rights organizations in the district have condemned the attack and demanded severe action against the assaulters.

At an initiative of local dalit youths and other organizations, a case under the Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability (Offence and Punishment) Act-2068 has been filed against the temple management committee and the accused at the District Police Office today. Nepalnews.com
