Schools shut down in Chitwan for Maoist teacher union's convention
All public and private schools in Chitwan remain closed on Monday at the pressure of the UCPN (Maoist)-aligned All Nepal Teachers Association (ANTA) for its district convention, which is to be opened by the Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Teachers unions of the Nepali Congress and the UML and the private school operators also agreed to close down the schools for a day after continuous pressure from ANTA.
The teachers unions of the NC and the UML had initially objected to the call from ANTA but they finally agreed to close the schools to compensate the lost time later on, reports said.
Meanwhile, the student unions of the opposition parties and some local human rights groups have accused the Maoists of forcefully shutting down the schools for the reception of the Maoist chairman.
The student unions had registered a memorandum at the District Education Office protesting against the closure, but there was no decision from the DEO. nepalnews.com
