Veteran republican leader Ramraja Prasad Singh passed away at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in the Capital on Wednesday. He was 77.

Singh, a revolutionary leader who had claimed responsibilityof exploding bombs in front of Narayanhiti Palace and Singha Durbar in Kathmandu during the party-less Panchayati regime while fighting for democracy and republican set up in the country, had been suffering from multiple diseases including kidney problems, Parkinson’s disease and high-blood pressure. He breathed his last at the Maharajgunj- based hospital at 6 am today.
He was brought to Kathmandu from his hometown Rajbiraj and admitted to TUTH last week after his health condition deteriorated.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai including top political party leaders had been to the hospital to see Singh.
Born in Saptari district, Singh was a pioneering revolutionary who is believed to be the first exponent of republicanism in the country.
After being convicted of bombings, his property was confiscated and sent to jail. But he managed to escape jail and went into exile in India.
Chairman of the Janabadi Morcha, Singh was the Maoist candidate in the presidential election held in 2008. He, however, lost to Dr Yadav, the presidential candidate of Nepali Congress. nepalnews.com
