A meeting of the Council of Ministers decided to appoint him to the post. Rana, who replaces Rabindra Pratap Shah, was the most senior Additional Inspector General (AIG).
Communication minister and government spokesperson Raj Kishor Yadav informed that Rana was appointed as per the Home Ministry's proposal.
The appointment in the top post in the Nepal Police comes after protracted dispute between Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijay Gachchhadar.
PM Bhattarai had backed Rana while Gachhadar had been lobbying for AIG Bhisma Prasai for IGP. Gachchhadar had even threatened to quit the coalition government if his candidate did not get the post. nepalnews.com
