A team of security personnel backed by five fire engines was able to take the blaze under control after almost 45 minutes.
The fire is believed to have broken out from the first floor of the building at 8am. The building is the headquarters of Jyoti Group, one of the prominent and respected business houses of the country.
Television footage showed people trapped inside the building being rescued by security personnel and fire fighters through the windows.
However, it was not immediately known what caused the fire.
There are no reports of any casualties or the extent of the damage the fire has caused as of now.
But initial reports say the fire has caused a major damage in the Kantipath branch of Nepal Bank Limited, which is situated in the top floor of the building which houses insurance companies and several corporate offices including a branch of Grandi Hospital Nepalnews.com
