Bhaktapur Sanothimi Campus shut for five more days as student unions refuse to bury the hatchet
The Bhaktapur Sanothimi Campus remains shut down on Friday after the campus administration decided to close it for five more days with rival student unions still refusing to resolve the growing dispute regarding celebrating sports week in the campus.
Large numbers of Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel have been deployed in and around the Sanothimi campus area since early morning today to prevent further disputes and clashes between rival student unions.
The campus has remained tense since Wednesday following the dispute between the student unions on the issue of celebrating sports week from February 28 to March 6 turned into ugly clashes.
At least a dozen people and students were injured in clashes between All Nepal Independent Students Union – Revolutionary (ANISU-R), All Nepal Free Students Union (ANFSU) and Nepal Students Union (NSU) on Wednesday. The injured are undergoing treatment at Nagarik Hospital. The dispute emerged after the Maoist affiliated ANISU-R said it wants to single-handedly organise the sports week while Nepali Congress aligned NSU and CPN (UML) backed ANFSU were in favour of organising the sports event in collaboration with other student unions and the campus.
The Free Students Union (FSU), Sanothimi, was planning to organize Martyrs Week Sports 2069 from Feb 28 to March 6. nepalnews.com
