Student unions protest public transportation fares hike
Various student unions affiliated to opposition parties organised demonstrations in front of government colleges Monday morning, demanding withdrawal of government decision to hike public transportation fares.
Eleven student unions including the Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Student Union (NSU) and UML-aligned ANNFSU enforced hour-long 'chakkajam' in front of various colleges in the capital from 9 am to 10 am, causing traffic snarls.
The students unions have said that they will continue the protest until the government revokes its decision.
A meeting of student unions on Sunday decided to stage protests. Similarly, they are also preparing to submit a memorandum to the transport minister later today.
The government increased the public transportation fare by 9 percent effective from Friday. Commuters now have to pay at least Rs.15 for the shortest travel. nepalnews.com
