Shital Niwas questions EC nominations

President Ram Baran Yadav Friday asked the Constitutional Council (CC) to clarify its recommendation on the appointment office-bearers of the Election Commission (EC).

The President's office in a letter to the CC asked if re-appointment of Nil Kantha Upreti as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Dolakh Bahadur Gurung and Ayodhi Prasad Yadav as commissioners will be in line with the constitutional provisions. Upreti was acting CEC while Gurung and Yadav were commissioners previously. Their tenure had ended few months earlier.

The first meeting of the newly formed Council had recommended the names of the EC office-bearers. Along with Upreti, Yadav, and Gurung, the CC had named Ila Sharma and Ram Bhakta PB Thakur as the commissioners.

The five names were picked by the high-level political committee of the four major parties which is headed by UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Nepalnews.com
