38-member Indra Jatra festival committee formed
With little over two weeks remaining for the traditional Indra Jatra, a festival dedicated to the Hindu god of rain, a 38-member Indra Jatra Festival Celebration Committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Sujib Bajracharya.
The committee headed by Bajracharya, who is also the chairman of the Newa Jagaran Forum, comprises Pancha Narayan Maharajan as vice coordinator, Nani Hera Maharjan as secretary, representatives of different Wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and representatives of different social welfare organisations as members.
The committee’s main aim is to ensure that the festival is held in a smooth, hassle-free manner and in an environment of social harmony and friendship, according to the members of the committee.
The committee is also responsible for maintaining security during the day-long festival as high-profile dignitaties including President, Prime Minister, senior ministers, top government officials, security heads, foreign ambassadors and other take part in the festival.
The festival is marked especially by the chariot procession of Kumari, the virgin goddess, including Ganesh and Bhairab. It is one of the most important festivals in the capital.
Thousands of people, including tourists from various countries, come to watch the mask dances including other religious rituals with keen interest.
