Bandh in 10 districts, locals protest, bus torched
The CPN-Maoist-led 33 party alliance called a bandh in ten districts on Sunday. The bandh has been called in the districts proposed for Tamsaling state and includes Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Ramechap, Sindhuli, Rasuwa, Chitwan, Dhading, Nuwakot and Makwanpur.
The alliance enforced the banda demanding postponement of the stipulated date of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election although all-party meetings, including the opposing parties, are underway.
Transportation along the East-West highway has been disrupted because of the bandh.
Locals fight back, several arrested
CPN-Maoist cadres had gathered in Satdobato intersection early in the morning to stop vehicles and had called on Dolakha to close business. However, the residents rose against the bandh. According to the Satdobato Police Beat, local police took five bandh enforcers into custody to prevent serious clash in the area.
Locals in Banepa have also fought against the bandh. Businessmen protested against the bandh, arguing that a bandh ahead of the festival is harmful for their business. This sparked a clash between the locals and bandh enforcers. The local police have taken nine into custody, including UCPN-Maoist district incharge Chudamani Gautam. Others arrested are central committee member Kancha Ram Tamang, and party cadres Gita Rasaili, Khij Raj Neupane, Suntali Tamang, Gopal Ghimire, Krishna Sundras and Anil Rayamajhi.
Journalist attacked, bus torched
The CPN-Maoist cadres in Banepa have manhandled journalist of Arniko Television Dev Raj KC. He had been on an assignment to collect reports in Banepa when UCPN-Maoist cadres hit his motorcycle with a rod.
CPN-Maoist cadres have also torched a bus in Dhulikhel. The bus, with registration number Ba 2 Kha 5672, was en-route from Kathmandu to Melamchi. Although there have been reports that the bus was lit before the passengers had a chance to get off the bus, Dhulikhel’s CDO Durga Bhandari confirms that all the passengers had gotten off the bus before the fire.
According to Police Inspector at the District Traffic Police Office, Banepa, Sunil Malla, some cadres of the CPN-Maoist including central member, Chudamani Gautam were arrested after the incident. Nepalnews.com/ Rajendra Pokharel
