Govt urges EC to extend candidacy registration deadline
A Council of Ministers meeting Wednesday urged the Election Commission to extend the deadline for the registration of candidacy without affecting the final date of Constituent Assembly election on November 19.
According to cabinet officials, the request was made so that the closed list of proportionate candidates and open list of direct candidates could be submitted without hassles.
Parties lost few weeks holding futile talks with the alliance of 33 smaller parties in a bid to bring them on board the election process. It delayed parties' preparation for the registration of their candidates with the Commission.
As per the existing deadline of the Commission, proportionate candidates have to be registered by September 23, while the direct candidates have to be registered by September 10.
The government wants the registration to be extended by at least 10 days for both types of candidates, added the officials.
Earlier in the morning, Interim Election Council chairman Khil Raj Regmi and Chief Election Commissioner Nil Kantha Uprety discussed preparations and security arrangements for the election. Nepalnews.com
