Early marriage results in increase in dropouts of girl students
Over 90 per cent of the girls in a VDC in Banke district are married at the age of 12 to 14 years of old, according to a report.
A research carried out by Phatima Foundation stated that girls from Muslim and Madhesi communities were married before 15 in Indrapur VDC in the district.
The girls are deprived from going to the schools when they enter into adolescent and are married, it is said.
Half of the respondent girls said that they were not sent to the school while eight others said they were deprived from scholarships at their schools.
Currently, three primary schools, a lower secondary schools and three Madrasa are providing education to 1,474 students including 710 girls in the VDC.
However, teachers said that dropout rate of the girl students is very high due to the early marriage that is rampant in the local societies.
Similarly, poor economic status of the parents and poor physical structures of the schools and Madrasa are also blamed for low student enrollment. RSS
