Nepali Way of Outsourcing
Why not start a new category of awards to honour those who make outstanding contribution in the field of outsourcing?
Outsourcing is the talk of the every town in the world these days. Nepal can be of no exception. Nepal started outsourcing with vegetable and fruit vending and now peacekeeping. The hiring of foreigners to work for wages was unacceptable in the past but now ‘the times are a-changin’, to borrow the term from Bob Dylan. In fact, the very magazine (the paper part) you’re reading now is outsourced. It is being brought from Canada via India .
Terai outsources a lot of activities to the Chhotaor Bada Rajans of India time to time to help the businessmen in terai to handle their excess money by taking it away without going through the drudgery of banking system. People say also the recent arsons in different parts of Terai were outsourced to a number of such Rajans.
Nepal has recently announced that the Office of the President of the United States will be outsourced to Nepal for few months or years. Nepal 's success story as the outsourcing hub is becoming the subject matter of interest in the world in current times.
But now the progress in outsourcing may have finally gone too far. You can read between the lines from the reports of informal discussion our would be President and Prime Minister Regent GP Koirala carries out with people of various walks of life and conclude that henceforth all new recruits for the positions in the cantonments will be from the US and the recruitment process will be outsourced to the UN.
However, UN has still not accepted the contract. “Even after culling the under–aged Maoists, the cantonments are bulging on the seams. Therefore, we are still not able to take up the recruitment job,” says UNMIN chief Ian Martin.
Outsourcing is ingrained in our Nepali culture and history. Recalling the recent history, we can notice that we first sent out our able-bodied young guys to work as mercenary so that the space would be created for outsourcing the job of vending vegetables and fruits here. Now the Labour Minister spends most of the time abroad trying to find places to send more of such Nepali youth there so that more space will be created for outsourcing our jobs. And, that is quite successful endeavour. The airlines are facing shortage of seats. Therefore, new airlines are starting service to Nepal with slogans like: ‘Don’t’ panic for the surge in insurgency! Come aboard our broad-bodied craft to go abroad.’
Finance Minister Mahat also agrees that the Nepali government’s way of outsourcing by exporting manpower is lauded by all the donors. “And the supply problems are a thing of the past. AK-47s, roadside bombs, suicide vests - just say the word, and it’s ours. All that is made possible by the outsourcing mechanism !”
Nepal continues to explore other outsourcing possibilities. Among them is the position of a Vice President and a number of positions of the cabinet. We are looking not only at the US but also at India , Britain and China .
