Blessings in Disguise
If you are disappointed with the ongoing load shed-
ding in the country and believe that Nepal is doomed,
you are wrong. Our economy is turning Socialist,
every Nepali is becoming able to afford to go to casinos for a recreation, and all of those who have been complaining of no business for the last few years will turn rich very soon. Believe that the Bandha, extortion and unionism is ending and racism is over, as peace is already here. There are solid reasons to say this.
The unending load shedding is giving rise to a new form of cottage industry in the country quietly, as a blessing in disguise, producing scores of goods to counter the power outage. Load shedding has helped millions of small industries to grow thus creating millions of jobs.
Small manufacturers, who were actually exploiting load shedding, are getting handsome earnings by making emergency lights, wax candles, generators, UPS and many others. The ignored and even dying business of artificial power sources got strength in the current “era of darkness.” This load shedding crisis that had started long time ago had triggered the electrical equipments price-hike. Since then, the prices of such goods have not come down and the manufacturers are earning abnormal profits from these energy articles. More are entering the industry in droves creating more employment.
According to an estimate, there are thousands of factories in the cities and villages which produce these goods to cater every household in the country. According to the labour department sources, millions of new jobs have been already created in these industries and counting is still going on.
The biggest blessing in disguise of the load shedding in the country so far has been that the Nepal Electricity Authority is distributing free electricity (calling it leakage) to almost 25 percent of the people of this country. If you and I are not getting it, it is our foolishness.
Everybody knows that the reason behind the load shedding the demand exceeding the supply. So, load shedding is inevitable anyway. Therefore, as civilized citizens of the country, we should be happy and grateful that whatever light we are given is already a blessing of our government to us. Remember that if you expect more and get less it reduces your joy. It is always wiser to expect less and be happy for whatever we get. So, expect the lowest and maximize your happiness.
We should also understand that the load shedding is very important as it is a procedure in which parts of an electric power system are disconnected in an attempt to prevent failure of the entire electrical system due to overloading. Don’t you think that load shedding is better than the failure of the entire electrical system?
As exercise is important to shed weight in the body so is the load shedding for the industry to keep it fit and well proportioned. It is the rest time for the machinery of the factory. Therefore, you should rather start to love load shedding.
Besides the commercial benefits mentioned above, there are personal and other benefits as well of load shedding. Few examples:
1. It is impossible to watch television. You finally have time to play with your children. Many of my friends have already reported geometric improvement in their memory of old Hindi, Nepali songs, nursery rhymes and Bhajans while enjoying Antakshari in the darkness with the children.
2. Conversation has shifted from boring statistics to interesting topics of naughty neighbours.
3. Every meal is nowadays a barbeque. A friend of mine in fact has started rooftop kitchen with firewood stove. He says the smoky food tastes really good, forgetting the warnings from his doctor about the carbon.
4. A ready excuse for being late for a meeting and for three days stubble on the cheeks.
5. Newspaper cartoons are getting funny again.
6. Finally even your competitor is suffering together.
7. That annoying noise from the neighbourhood construction site has stopped.
8. Rapacious capitalist exploitation of our mineral wealth has ceased.
9. Thousands of Rupees are saved as shopping has become impossible.
Happy New Year 2009!
