For the love of the Game

The Nepal Cycling Association (NCA), in collaboration with International Cycling Union and Asian Cycling Confederation organized 14th Asian Mountain Bike Championship in Nepal from November 8 to 10, 2008 at Chobhar in Kathmandu in which altogether 30 male and 11 female cyclists from 13 countries participated. The event was divided into two categories—Cross Country and Down Hill. A total of five Nepali cyclists took part in the event. It is the third biggest cycling event in the world, the first being the World Championship and the second being the World Cup.

To hold this championship in the Nepali soil, Gopal Kakshapati, Vice-President of the Nepal Cycling Association went to attend the meeting of Asian Cycling Confederation held in South Korea in 2006 to bid for it. “I was disappointed to come across the fact that only a few among the member countries knew about Nepal despite it being a member of the confederation. Most of them were reluctant to approve Nepal as the potential venue for the event,” he shares. “Some of them even had queries like, ‘do you have five-star hotels in Nepal?”’ But all this only solidified the resolve of Kakshapati to show the world our natural trails, the best to hold such events. He brought the proposal again at the confederation meeting in Bangkok. “I held power point presentations to detail them about the trails that we have got, provided them with the list of five-star hotels and pictures of the spot where we had planned to hold the event. This helped us to convince a bit to the representatives from 39 member countries.”

In early 2008, another such meeting was held in Japan where Kakshapati went provided all the information and explanations regarding the ongoing preparation for the championship. Though he had to ask for some expertise from outside to develop the race course and to manage the event, he didn’t compromise on factors. Finding sponsors was another hitch but at the end, everything went smooth and fine and Nepal made history. “The roar of the crowd during the event left no one disappointed. The visiting authorities were quite surprised to witness the measure of appreciation that it received from the spectators. They have asked us to bid for the World Championship,” concluded Kakshapati with smile all over his face.
