Editor's Note

"Hamlet had method in his madness" and so do the Maoist in their administration in Nepal. Even though ruling on the principle of democratic coalition, it has been difficult to find in the last eight months any semblance of democratic behavior by them. The other constituent parties in the coalition are meekly submitting to the domineering and arrogant leadership of the bigger party. Even the big CPN-UML whose leaders don't tire to pat themselves on their back are behaving like a tame pet before the Maoist supremo. They know only to threaten that they will quit the coalition and come out against Maoist non-democratic functioning but they cannot fool the Nepali people by their spurious tall talk. The real intentions of the Maoists have always been crystal clear. They have no faith either in democracy or in democratic rule of law. According to democratic norms, their government should have resigned so many times before. Their latest hooliganism against the most sacred institution of the land – the Supreme Court - is clear proof of their sinister design to impose totalitarianism in the country. As it is very well known, Nepali politicians, civil society members and intellectuals all run after the power centers in the expectations of some goodies. It is time Nepal's patriotic section and Nepal's good and sincere friends acted. India, that is mainly responsible to bring them to the leading role in the Nepali government, can no more afford to sit quiet. It is their ultimate responsibility to save Nepal from becoming a totalitarian state. It is also high time that the Nepali Army sat up and stared thinking. We do hope they have not turned into frock-clad nannies yet.
