Question for Survival
The recent contradictory remarks of CPN-Maoist leader and prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda indicates that he is feeling underground tremor of big magnitude
By A CORRESSPONDENT
"If the boat of this government sinks, all of us will sink. If this government is pulled down, people will capture the power through rebellion," threatened prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda addressing a unity meeting of two extreme communist parties. "One must not forget that the recent change is the result of our gun and gun can bring another change. After the unification with CPN-Masal, our party Unified CPN-Maoist can face any threat given by reactionary, regressive, internal and external forces."

PM Prachanda: Fighting for survival |
Along with boasting enhanced strength of CPN- Maoist after unification with CPN-Masal unity center led by Narayan Kazi Shrestha (Prakash), prime minister Prachanda - who cancelled his official visit to European countries at the last minute, was also worried about future of his position pointing towards a threat his government is facing.
Prachanda criticized his ruling coalition partners CPN-UML and main opposition Nepali Congress and its supremo Girija Prasad Koirala as well as former King and followers of monarchy.
However, he also stressed the need to have strong unity among all nationalist and communist forces to fight against expansionist force to safe guard nation.
Prime minister Prachanda's party has already given membership to dozens of former die-hard royalist like Janardan Acharya, Surya Bahadur Sen in the name of unity with nationalists but his harsh criticism against the same force is, itself, a strange thing.
In typical communist style Prime minister Prachanda, who himself claimed that he stayed eight years in Nepal's neighbouring country out of 12 years of violent insurgency, often stated that the country's sovereignty and independence is under threat. Interestingly, he did not name the country from which such threat emanates.
"Don't think that this government will be replaced by another coalition like in the past. External forces are backing internal forces to dislodge us. There is conspiracy against this government," said prime minister Prachanda.
Once out of power, all the political forces hold one kind of perception. When they are in power, politicians have different perception about nation and national unity. Whether he is Grija Prasad Koirala or Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, all of them want political stability when they are in power. Thus, they see all the conspiracy against nation as well as their position.
Prime minister Prachanda worked as a close partner to destroy the factors of stability in the country and he is now defenceless. Whatever he says, he has to go as like all his predecessors the moment his utility in power will complete.
Unlike big countries where the internal dynamics matter much to the political stability, it is external powers particularly two neighbours that matter more given Nepal's geo-political situation. "Mistakes of former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala and prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal do not make much difference in the country. If one of Nepal's neighbours crosses its limits or commits even a minor mistake, it will invite devastating result in the whole region," said a political analyst.
Prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda's recent remarks indicate that his position is under threat and he will have to go as all his predecessors when there is a move to dislodge him. At a time when his unity with the Masal enhances his strength, why did prime minister was so afraid about stability of his government?
So far as his remarks on threat for the country's independence are concerned, it is reflection about the insecurity he is feeling for his position. Nepal's reality is that Nepal will survive as an independent nation, despite many tremors of low and high density, as in the past.
