Triangular Look
Three artists from Bangladesh express their views on life and nature through their paintings
By A CORRESPONDENT
Every artist has his/her own way of expressing the inner feelings, by observing his/ her surroundings. As the human nature is too complicated, one needs to be involved in tireless effort to bring this state of coexistence between nature and man.
This is what one can see in the painting exhibition displayed by three artists from Bangladesh in their group photo exhibition at Imago-Dei Cafe Gallery.
Created by three artists Syed Zahid Iqubal, Mustafa Jamil Akbar (Shamim) and Fahamida Akther Kakoli, the paintings highlighted various aspects of ways of life and natural surroundings where one can see pain, agony and pleasures.
As usual, artists have their own choices and issues to paint about. For instance, Shamim’s creations are devoted to rickshaws and rickshaw pullers’ way of life. He tried to portray a very complicated process of human life involved in facing day to day difficulties. Shamim’s paintings show that this three-wheeler is not just another mode of transportation but also a symbol of Dhaka’s identity.
Every city in the world has its own different character and peculiarities. One of the peculiarities of Dhaka city is that it has lots of three wheeler rickshaws. These rickshaws not only direct the life of people but there is a different world within it. Shamim is able to show the culture and life involved in the rickshaws.
He uses various colors to highlight the rickshaw. After looking at the paintings, one can find Shamim’s choice is on the darker shade and he uses black colors to sketch his rickshaws. His paintings have a variety of media like acrylic colors and brick dust.
Artist Zahid Iqbal’s paintings are different than Shamin’s as he uses a variety of media to paint them. Along with paints, Iqbal uses soil, tar and varnish. His pieces which represent his perception of nature, don a dark and rusty look. Iqbal is inspired by nature very much. Unlike his colleague Shamin who is more interested in the life of rickshaw puller, Iqbal is very much inspired by the nature and its surroundings.
One of the aims of artist Iqbal is to observe the life of human and nature and paint the intricate relations between them. This is very difficult as well as challenging job for everyone. Despite all the complexities and difficulties, artist Iqbal is able to do so.
“Natured inspired me and with these creations I am trying to relay how nature is being avoided by people leading to its deterioration,” said artist Iqbal.
Thanks to the global climate change, Bangladesh, which has always been facing the wrath of nature, is in a very critical state. The rise of sea level is definite to affect its nature. Thus, artist Iqbal seems worried about the deteriorating weather and nature.
Proving to be different than her two artist colleagues, Kakoli paints in a bright canvas. According to her, the paintings represent her present state of mind. In her paintings titled New Door she seems very happy to describe her happiest moment of life and imagination. “After painting all these colors, I am very happy,” said Kakoli. Her paintings also depict her recent acquaintance with the wildlife of her country. Figurative sketches of humans on a canvas filled with splashes of bright colors are how her canvas looks like.
