Marriage Ritual: Girls prepare for their first of three marriages in Neaukha, near Basantapur, Saturday, Nov 03 07. The women of the Newar community in Kathmandu first marry the bel fruit and the sun before marrying a man, believing their first two husbands are immortal. The bel bibaha is performed when the girls are aged 4 to 8. In the ceremony, the girls are dressed as brides, have their feet colored red, and are married to the bel fruit through the chanting of sacred mantras. They are then carried around the temple by their fathers to complete the marriage.
