Surya Nepal Snooker Challenge
grows in stature

KATHMANDU, Sept 18 - After a resounding success
of the inaugural tournament last year, the second Surya Nepal Snooker Challenge will get
underway from September 24 with added appeal, the organisersSurya Tobacco Company
(STC) and the Billiards, Snooker and Pool Association of Nepal (BSPAN) announced here
Tuesday.
Addressing a press meet, the STC brand manager
Ravi Aryal, said that the tournament this year has been increased by almost three times as
compared to the preceding year, both in terms of prize money and participants. Unlike the
inaugural edition, this years tournament, with whopping Rs 530,000 prize money, is
expected to draw over thousand cueists from 28 snooker parlours across the country.
Underlining companys long-standing support
to the sports sector, Aryal said: "We will strive to make the tournament
international by ensuring that all specifications are as per international
standards."
Preliminary rounds of the 20-days tournament
will be held in hosts of citiesPokhara, Narayanghat, Butwal,
Dharan, Birgunj, Itahari and Biratnagar along
with the capital. The organisers expect to complete the qualifying rounds by October 1,
thus allowing the final rounds from October 7, which will be staged at Lainchaur Covered
Hall in Kathmandu.
Eight seeded cueists will join along the winners
and runners-up from each of the 28 venues in the BSPAN order of merit, making the final
round a 64-man contest.
Apart from trophies and certificate, the
tournament winner will collect a cheque of Rs
75,000 while the runner-up
and the second runner-up will bag Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. Beside that the
player securing the highest break in the final round will receive Rs 25,000 while each of
the winners and runners-up in the qualifying rounds will get Rs 6,000 and Rs 4,000
respectively.
Among those present on the occasion were the
general -secretary of BSPAN Rajesh Bajracharya, member Chakra Lama and other officials
from STC.
