New FNCCI chief floats priority agendas

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Aug 3 : Binod Bahadur Shrestha, the newly elected president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), today floated three priority agendas to strengthen the federation as a key player in economic development process. The new leadership would focus on issues of larger interest, he said.

In a telephonic interview with The Kathmandu Post today, he said that his foremost priority would be to maintain unity in the federation, resolve grievances of groups and personalities opining differently during the election.

"Team work is essential for the development of the organisation and moving forward. Maintaining this team spirit will be my foremost priority," he said. Stating that people trying to split the FNCCI have failed, he added that the new leadership would listen to all diverse ideas within the organisation.

Shrestha further said that the FNCCI would also strongly voice out for policy implementation, which is relatively weak. "The government has promised various legal and policies changes in the past. Unless these are translated into action, the very concept of public-private partnership will not work," he said.

Translating words into action is also crucial to promote businesses and restore confidence within the business community, he added.

Shrestha further cited governance, financial discipline and transparency as the third agenda of the new leadership. He said that the FNCCI would play a lead role in curtailing unofficial businesses and stress on fair business practices. "Establishment of transparency in businesses aides portraying realistic business atmosphere, which will further help in resolving problems seen in the sector," he said.

Referring to the sparse representation from far- and mid-western region in the new executive body, he said that the new leadership would lay special focus on these regions.

He further said that the four vice presidents would be finalised on Monday. The business community has already elected a set of 55-memer executive body for the next two years on Saturday.
