Army men pack punch

KATHMANDU, July 19 : The Army men, playing in
the colours of Tribhuvan Club, dominated todays senior mens Birthday Cup
Boxing finals winning seven of the 11 gold medals on offer. National player Dhana Bahadur
Dhitang, who represented the country in the 14th Asian Games on 2002 in Busan, beat Jivan
Khwang by RSC(Referee Stopping the Contest)-Outclass in the 60-Kg within 30 seconds into
the first round to epitomise armys dominance.
Other Tribhuvan Club victories include, Dipendra
Bakhuche beating Hari Khatiwada in 51-Kg, Devendra Thakuri beating Gajendra Gurung of
Mahendra Police Club (MPC) in 54-Kg, Bam Bahadur Syangtan beating Devendra Maharjan on
points; Bikash Pariyar beating Niraj Amatya by RSC-Outclass in 75-Kg and Bishnu Rijal
winning by RSC-Injury when his opponent Roshan Yadav was ordered out of the canvas with a
bleeding nose.
Tribhuvan Club also took the Seniors
Pushkar Dhoj Shahi title after Surya Rana Magar beat Nijaya Khadka by points. The 48-Kg
titles are dedicated to Shahi, who won Nepal a boxing gold in the first South Asian
Federation (SAF) Games held in Kathmandu in 1984.
Mahendra Police Club also bagged a gold today in
57-Kg finals after Neem Bahadur Reule beat Gyanendra Shakya in the finals.
The remaining title in the seniors bouts
went to Meghdoots Dipendra Maharjan who convincingly beat Shushil Ghimire from
Makwanpur in the 64-Kg.
Dinesh Basukala won the juniors 60-Kg
title beating Shambhu Gurung on RSC-Outclass. The match between Sidhartha Bikram Bhandari
and Pradip Shrestha was stopped when Shrestha was ordered off the canvas to have his
injury administered by the ring-side doctors. But as the match had already progressed to
second round, it was decided on points, as per the rules. The officials finally calculated
Bhandari to have more points than Shrestha giving Bhandari the 64-Kg juniors title.
