Awareness on reproductive health rising

Post Report

KATHMANDU, June 20 : There has been a remarkable rise in reproductive-health-related knowledge and practice among the young married women in both Young Communication Action Group (YCAG) and mothers’ group areas, according to a research.

However, the changes in practice of family planning and antenatal care have not shown consistent trends probably because of conflict situation in the project sites during the implementation phase, states the research.

The Frontiers Operation Research Study was jointly commissioned by Centre for Research on Environment, Health and Population Activities (CREHPA), Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA).

Disseminating the findings of the study, Ananda Tamang, director of CREHPA, said that the research was carried out to study the extent of YCAG impact on reproductive health and social behaviour within the group members and to examine the efficacy of communication action groups of young couples in enhancing reproductive health knowledge.

Speaking at the dissemination seminar on "Determining an Effective and Replicable Communication-based Mechanism for Improving Young Couples’ Access to and Utilisation of Reproductive Health Information and Services", Dr ME Khan, regional associate director, Asia and Near East of the Population Council, said that Frontiers undertakes intervention projects to increase access, quality and use of contraceptive.

Umesh Dhakal, director, Health Department, NRCS, Binod Nepal and Ramesh Adhikari of CREHPA also made presentations. More than 30 representatives from various non-governmental organisations participated in the half-day seminar held here today.
