HM to inaugurate Mayadevi Temple

KATHMANDU May 8: His Majesty King Gyanendra will formally open the renovated Mayadevi Temple of Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha on May 16 to mark the 2547th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha and Lumbini Day, said Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Kuber Sharma at a press conference today.

Minister Sharma, while highlighting on-going preparations for the event, said that a budget of Rs 7 crore 18 lakhs has been set aside for the purpose.

Buddhist monks, representatives of various Buddhist organisations and Ministers for Culture and Religion from different countries have been invited for the event, said the Minister.

A 501-member main committee, 31-member preparatory committee and 12 sub-committees have been formed to organise the event commencing from May 15 to end on May 17.

The three-day event is being jointly organised by the Lumbini Development Trust and the Nepal Tourism Board.

During the auspicious occasion, visitors will be not charged any fees for entering the premises of Lumbini and the museum site. Similarly, stupas and monasteries will also be open to foreign visitors free of charge.

Over the years, Lumbini has developed into an important international pilgrimage site as well as tourist center with the construction of monasteries of different countries as per the master plan of the Lumbini Development Trust.

Lumbini Day has been observed since 1999 as per the spirit of the First International Buddhist Summit of 1998.
