  FOR THE BREAKS

What's on TV this evening…

It's seven in the evening. All is quiet in the office and most of your co-workers have left for the day and you suddenly realise that you have three straight evenings ahead without any engagement. You want to use this opportunity to catch up on the media, maybe some good television programmes or visiting some interesting websites or catching up with some reading.

Here is list of good options that one has on TV with business proximity.

Business Bites: on BBC world on Sundays at 2215 hours. An interesting format of sector specific discussion hosted by Ronnie Screwwala gets the business leaders talking about the trends, issues and forecast of their respective sectors, both globally, regionally and domestically for India , therefore provides fascinating insights, within an hour, into what is happening. If one needs to get a good understanding of the steel industry and its price hike or maybe understanding the global dynamics developing in the travel industry or perhaps understanding the prospects of the pharmaceutical industry, then this is a must watch. As Business Bites is filmed in some of the best restaurants in India, and features some of the people defining India's economy, it does away with the formality of a TV studio to offer an insider's look into the industries being examined thus giving the programme a soft approach on hard business issues appropriately screened on Sunday nights. Some of the guests featured in the programmes include: Jayant Kawale, Chairman of Maharashtra State Electricity Board-MSEB, Firdose Vandrevalla, Managing Director of Tata Power Company, Nandan Nilekani, MD, Infosys, Vivek Paul, MD, Wipro from the Software and IT industry; K Purwar, Chairman, State Bank of India and Sanjay Nayar, Country Head, Citigroup from the banking sector and Vijay Mallaya, Chairman, UB Group and Richard Rushton, CEO, SAB Miller from the liquor industry.

Apprentice: on Starworld on Fridays at 2115 hours. This is one programme which single-handedly managed to combine personal capacity and group dynamics, zeal, performance, focus and luck. This programme brings home contemporary corporate culture into millions of drawing rooms with the tag line - 'You're Fired.' Produced on the format of reality television, a group of young people vying for a top job with Trump Corporation is personally assigned group business task with a leader/manager chosen from the group with a clear mandate of winning performance or one member of the losing group getting fired unrepentantly. The group task could be anything from developing an advertisement campaign for a private jet company or designing a new bottle for Pepsi or negotiating with seafood suppliers for a retail chain for the best price or managing a restaurant to obtain the best revenues for the night. It is fascinating to watch the evolving dynamics of the members and watch in shock when seemingly sure winners lose and some non-performers survive. Would be a good lesson for all corporate mandarins to learn.

Board Room: Kantipur Television on Wednesdays at 2000 hours: Kantipur Television takes up business issues more at macro-level of certain selected sectors and quizzes Nepal 's industry leaders on the constraints and issues being faced by them. However, on most occasions the talks veer towards government apathy and the policy shortcoming thereby restricting the interest level of viewers outside of that segment.

Fast Track: on BBC world on Wednesdays on 2200 hours

Akhtar Khan hosts this programme and brings in global news on the world of travel with special focus on business travel. The programme highlights deals, destinations and news for both leisure and business travellers. Useful insights and details on the constantly changing global travel industry and useful for corporate travellers.

Click Online: on BBC world on Saturdays at 1315 hours

Stephen Cole, the veteran BBC newscaster, reports on the ways that technology is changing the world around us and on the exciting developments that will alter our daily lives in the near future. Stephen Cole and the team interview the scientists and experts who are coming up with the new gadgets and inventions, and they also have regular recommendations on the best websites to visit. Must watch for execs for tech update.

Finally, American Idol on Wednesdays/ Thursdays on Starworld at 2015 hours

Not at all a business programme, but fascinating in terms of strategy execution, demographic selection and performance. One of the best feature of this programme is the way Simon Cowell, the main judge, comes up with unique perspectives on each performance without mincing words, thereby, providing great sound bytes for the viewer's entertainment. A pure entertainer for you to chill out with after a hard day at the office.
