What type of air is called “polluted”?
Air with maximum quantity of dust particles is called polluted air. When dust particles increase, the air is more polluted. When dust particle decreases, the air is less polluted or good in quality.

What is “PM10”?
PM10 is a measurement unit for dust particles present in the air. In technical terms, PM10 means Particulate Matter with diameter less than or equal to 10 micrometer. Its measurement unit is microgram per cubic meter.

What are the types of air quality?
There are five levels of air quality depending upon the amount of dust. They are as follows:

61 to 120

Unhealthy   

121 to 350

Very Unhealthy   

351 to 425

Hazardous   

          Above 425         

Where are the air quality stations?
Air Quality of Kathmandu Valley is recorded at six stations daily, but the data is compiled on a weekly basis. The six stations are Putali Sadak, Matsyagaon, Tribhuvan University, Bhaktapur, Patan Hospital and Thamel.

Ministry of Environment and Population runs the stations under the assistance of Danish agency, Danida.


Capital air quality improves                                                                       What is PM10 ?

The quality of air in the Kathmandu Valley during January 22 to 28 improved as compared to the previous week, the Ministry of Environment and Population said.

The weekly averages of air pollution (based on the daily averages) during the period decreased in Putalisadak , Matsyagaon, Patan Hospital and Thamel areas while the data of Kirtipur and Bhaktapur monitoring stations were not available.

The Putalisadak area was the most polluted site while the Matsyagaon area was the least polluted site among the recorded monitoring stations.

The Putalisadak area recorded a weekly average (based on the daily averages) of 307.00 PM10 down from the previous period’s 324.86 PM10. The area recorded ‘unhealthy’ and 'very unhealthy’ air marks for six and one day respectively.

The Patan Hospital, Thamel and Matsyagaon monitoring stations were the second, third and fourth most polluted side recording weekly averages (based on daily averages) of 242.50 PM10, 178.86 PM10 and 70.14 PM10 down from 283.00 PM10, 213.71 PM10 and 83.57 PM10 respectively.

Three day’s data of Patan Hospital monitoring station were not available in the week.

The overall outdoor air quality of Kathmandu valley on Tuesday (January 31) was 'unhealthy’ recording 206 µgm/m3. nepalnews.com pb Feb 02 06

Valley air quality shows mixed results                                                      What is PM10 ?

The air quality of the Kathmandu Valley from January 8 to 14-posted at the Ministry of Environment and Population website shows mixed results as compared to the previous period for the second consecutive week.

According to the data recorded in the web site, the air quality at various monitoring stations of the Valley recorded both a rise and fall in the pollution levels during the period.

The weekly averages of air pollution (based on the daily averages) during the period decreased in Putalisadak and Thamel areas while it increased in Patan Hospital, Matsyagaon and Kritipur areas. The data of Bhaktapur monitoring station were not available throughout the week.

The Putalisadak area was the most polluted site while the Matsyagaon area was the least polluted.

The Putalisadak area recorded a weekly average (based on the daily averages) of 323.00 PM10 down from the previous period’s 431.00 PM10. Only two days’ data were available in this week, hence an accurate assessment could not be made. The area recorded 'very unhealthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ air marks in these two days.

The Matsyagaon area recorded 'moderate’ and ‘good’ air marks for six and one day respectively with a weekly average (based on the daily averages) of 66.57 up from previous period’s 59.43 PM10, according to the data.

The Patan hospital and Kritipur areas recorded weekly averages of 295.86 PM10 and 117.71 PM 10 up from 291.43 and 117.43 PM10 respectively.

The Thamel area recorded weekly average of 226.29 PM10 down from 264.86 PM10.

The weekly averages of air pollution (based on the daily averages) during the period increased in Putalisadak, Kritipur, Patan Hospital and Thamel areas while it decreased in Matsyagaon and Bhaktapur areas.

The Putalisadak area was the most polluted site while the Matsyagaon area was the least polluted.

The Putalisadak area recorded a weekly average (based on the daily averages) of 431.00 PM10 up from previous period’s 379.29 PM10. Only two days’ data were available in this week. The area recorded 'hazardous’, ‘unhealthy’ air marks in these two days.

The Matsyagaon area recorded 'moderate’ and ‘good’ air marks for three and four days respectively with a weekly average (based on the daily averages) of 59.43 PM10 down from previous period’s 63.57 PM10, according to the data.

The Patan hospital, Thamel and Kritipur areas recorded weekly averages of 291.43 PM10, 264.86 PM10, and 117.43 PM10 respectively up from 270.28 PM10, 216.28 PM10 and 104.28 PM10.

The Bhktapur area recorded weekly average of 170.75 PM10 down from 193.50 PM10. Three day’s data of Bhaktapur monitoring station were not available this week.
