Various trade unions marked the 123rd International Workers’ Day (May Day) on Tuesday demanding 10 percent representation of workers in representative bodies of the state along with social security.

General Federation of Nepalese Trade Union (GEFONT) organised a rally and a mass meeting with a theme “working class inclusion” across the country.

Speaking at a programme in Kathamndu, GEFONT office-bearers demanded 10 percent representation of workers in representative bodies of the state, ratification of ILO Convention 87, social security through Social Security Fund, introduction and operation of labour Inspection system, National Labour Commission, formulation of Labour Laws among others, according to press statement.

Addressing the mass meeting, former Prime Minister and chairman of CPN (UML) Jhala Nath Khanal assured the implementation of 10 percent representation of workers in state agencies in the new constitution.

Khanal also expressed full support of his party for the implementation of trade unions' raised agendas.

On the occasion, President of GEFONT Bishnu Rimal said that the trade unions will move forward vigorously in their raised common agendas by the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUCC).

Similarly, other trade unions including All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), Nepal Trade Union Congress- Independent (NTUC-I), Nepal Trade Union Federation (NTUF), Nepal Progressive Trade Union Federation (NPTUF), and National Democratic Trade Union Federation (NDTUF) also marked the May Day, organising rallies in different parts of the country and making similar demands. nepalnews.com
