Food crisis has hit the people in north Gorkha hard after a decrease in potato production in Gumda, Lapu, Laprak, Prok, Manbu, Kashigaun and other VDCs this year, national news agency reports.

People of these regions who live their life consuming Dhindo in the morning and potato in the evening as their meals are worried after their potato farming was destroyed due to the disease.

Potato planted in February was harvested two months earlier than regular schedule in May. District Agriculture Development Office said northern part of the district is unsuitable for potato farming at least for three years.

Lok Bahadur Gurung, Headmaster of Manikadevi Secondary School, Laprak complained authorities concerned have not paid attention to end food deficit. Khageshwor Sharma, Chief of the District Office of Nepal Food Corporation, Gorkha said people will die of hunger if government does not supply the foodstuffs as per the demands of this region. He said demand for food is high this year as 30,000 quintals of food was required in Machhakhola and Sirdibas Foodstuff Depot in the past when there was plenty of potato production.

Residents of northern Gorkha are obliged to live a hungry life due population growth, decrease on food production and negligence of the government to address the problem of two squares meals a day.

Upendra Ghale of Kerauja said life has been badly affected in the village due to food deficit. He complained that villagers were not heard though they had requested for food supply to the authorities. nepalnews.com
