The death toll from the earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale has reached 11 as reports of casualties and destruction kept pouring in from across the country till late Sunday night.
Two more deaths were reported from Jhapa and Bara, taking the number of quake related deaths in Nepal to 11 from the earlier nine, as per nepalnews count.
Ayesha Ghimire, a six-year-old paralysed girl of Bhanu tole in Kakarvitta, Jhapa, died reportedly after she fell unconscious as she could not come out of her house after the tremor.
Similarly, another death of an unidentified person reported from Bara district couldn’t be independently confirmed.
Analysing the trail of destruction left by Sunday earthquake in different parts of the country, the eastern hilly districts took the brunt of 6.8 quake, which is the biggest the country witnessed in 78 years.
At least six persons are confirmed dead and about 80 others injured in several districts in east including Taplejung, the district closed to the epicenter in Sikkim state of India
Hundreds of houses in Taplejung, Panchthar, Bhojpur and Sankhuwasabha have collapsed. Schools in the affected districts have also been damaged in the quake, halting classes. Police stations have also been partially damaged and mobile phone network coverage is erratic.
Media reports said that landslides triggered by quake has blocked Mechi highway.
In Ilam district, more than 500 families were displaced in the quake.
Around 1,000 houses were destroyed. The displaced are taking shelter in houses of their neighbours and in school buildings.
Reports about injuries and damage to houses and infrastructures were also coming from Sindhupalchowk, Khotang, Bara and Sindhuli districts. nepalnews.com
