The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is preparing to increase the electricity tariff by 20 percent effective from January 15.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and chairman of the Electricity Tariff Determination Commission Ganesh Prasad Subba agreed to increase the electricity tariff in a meeting held at PM’s Office in Singhdurbar on Wednesday.

The PM agreed in principle to increase the power tariff as per the suggestion of the Commission, said Commission chairman Subba.

The NEA will increase power tariff after taking official consent from the government.

Though the NEA had proposed an increase of 30 percent power tariff, 20 percent increase is being imposed based on the suggestion of the Commission. The Commission has recommended to increase electricity tariff by 20 percent for the time being.

The consumers have been paying Rs. 7 per unit for using electricity at present. However, Energy Minister Posta Bahadur Bogati recently claimed that the NEA has been facing  the loss of Rs. 3 per unit. nepalnews.com
