The Constitutional Committee (CC) Wednesday decided to amend the constitution drafting calendar by extending the January 5 deadline to January 29 for completing the discussions on a report submitted by the dispute resolution Sub-Committee to resolve the contentious issues, mainly the form of the governance.

Leaders of major three parties in a meeting of the Constitutional ...Earlier today, the meeting of the major three parties - UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and UML had decided to request the CC for the amendment to the constitution drafting calendar after they agreed to find consensus on the form of governance by January 29.

"We are yet to officially decide about amending the calendar. The discussions are on,” said Finance Minister and CC member Barsha Man Pun emerging from the meeting.

The major parties had agreed to amend the constitution drafting calendar approved by the CA as the Nepali Congress, the second largest party in the CA stood for making amendments for consensus instead of settling the contentious issues through voting.

Regarding form of governance, the NC's stance is for President elected by the electoral college while the UCPN (M), UML and most other parties are in favour of directly elected President and Prime Minister elected from the parliament. The Maoists and the UML are in favour of popularly elected President with Prime Minister elected from the parliament.

According to the constitution drafting time table, the CC should complete discussions to settle the dispute by January 5. The calendar should be amended to prevent the issues from being settled on the basis of a majority vote in the full Assembly. neaplnews.com
