KMC starts demolishing illegally constructed houses

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started demolishing illegally constructed houses within the metro area from Wednesday. The demolition started from the Sankhamul, near New Baneshwor.

KMC officials demolished the houses with the help security personnel using a bull dozer this afternoon amid obstruction from the locals. Security personnel had engaged in a brief scuffle with the locals before demolishing the house as locals obstructed the KMC plans of demolition.

KMC started demolishing the illegally constructed houses as per the plan of Town Development Project Implementation Agency one week after it issued a 70-point declaration about building and infrastructure construction in the city aera.

According to Town Development Committee, there are about 190 thousand houses within the Kathmandu metropolitan area out of which about 80 percent have unauthorised construction in at least one part of the house.

Officials say, only about 4000 people take permission for construction every year although hundreds more are constructed. nepalnews.com
