An Indian man burned his Nepali wife and in-laws alive for not offering sufficient dowry in marriage in Saptari district on Monday.

The man identified as Mohamad Iliyas, 35, originally of Mohanpur of Saharasi district, India, attempted to kill his second wife Hasina Khatun,30, including sister-in-law, brother-in-law, mother-in-law and father-in-law in this fashion while visiting them at Rajbiraj Municipality-2 of the district last night.

Enraged by lack of sufficient dowry in the wedding ceremony, he attempted to kills his wife and in-laws by pouring petrol on their bodies and in the house at 11 pm while all were sleeping.

All five members of Khatun’s family have sustained serious burn injuries in the incident. The injured are currently receiving medical care at Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital, Rajbiraj.

Khatun said she suffered physical as well as mental torture regularly at the hands of her husband for, as what her husband said, “failure to bring sufficient dowry in marriage”. She had been living in her parents’ house after being unable to bear the daily beatings and abuses.

Meanwhile, police has arrested the Iliyas from Tilathi, the bordering area of Nepal-India in Saptari district. nepalnews.com
