The Amnesty International (AI) has stated that Nepal's political parties that have been part of the government have failed to bring the perpetrators of human rights abuses into justice.
The London-based rights watchdog its annual report published worldwide on Thursday also said the political parties in the government actively subverted justice by demanding withdrawal of criminal charges in hundreds of cases, including seriousĀ human rights violations committed during the decade-long conflict.
The government continued to make interim payments to families of 'conflict victims', but failed to fulfill victims' rights to truth and justice by forming the two commissions-- Truth and Reconciliation commission and Disappearance investigation commission, the AI report said.
Despite repeated commitments, the biggest party of the Constituent Assembly (CA), the UCPN (Maoist), also cultivated the impunity culture by reaching agreement with the Terai-based parties to withdraw the criminal cases lodged against their party members, including those accused in human rights related offences during the armed conflict, the report reads.
The report further stated that torture and other ill-treatments in police custody remained widespread and that discrimination persisted on the basis of ethnicity, religion, gender, economic situation and disability. nepalnews.com
