National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed disappointment over the decision of the government to introduce an ordinance related to the formation of Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The NHRC chairperson Kedar Nath Upadhyaya has said the ordinance would not be able to provide justice to the victims of the human rights abuses as the it put emphasis on granting amnesty to the human rights violators.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers had decided to send four ordinances including one on truth and reconciliation to President Dr Ram Baran Yadav for approval on Monday.

During the meeting with the secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Nabin Ghimire and Inspector General of Nepal Police Rabindra Pratap Shah on Tuesday, the NHRC chief complained that the government was introducing the ordinance without incorporating advices of the Commission.

“The government should have consulted NHRC while preparing the draft of ordinance. The government has neglected the role of NHRC regarding the issues of human rights,” a press statement quoted Upadhyaya as saying. Nepalnews.com
