In a first of its kind case,a couple serving jail terms in Saptari district jail have filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court demanding they be allowed to live together to ensure their reproductive rights.
Suraja Marik Dom, 37, and his wife Chhotani Devi Marik Dom, 30, filed a joint petition based on article 20 (2) of the Interim Constitution which ensures reproductive rights to women.
They have mentioned in the writ petition that they are childless and will be without a successor to the family if they are not allowed to conceive at the right age.
At present, they are staying in separate cells of the district prison.
There is no provision for an imprisoned couple to stay together while serving the jail-term.
The SC has scheduled the hearing on the case for Tuesday.
The couple was jailed on charges of murdering a neighbour five years ago. nepalnews.com
