Nepali Congress observed the 29th B.P Koirala Memorial Day by organising various programmes across the country on Friday.

Nepali Congress leader Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat speaking during a tree...Nepali Congress has been observing the day by remembering the immense contribution made by one the founding leaders of the party for the establishment of democracy in the country.

On the occasion of the B.P Memorial Day, Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth organisation of the NC distributed fruits to the patients of the Maternity Hospital at Thapathali this morning.

B.P Koirala, one of the founding leaders of the NC, was the first elected prime minister of democratic Nepal.

But an intervention from an ambitious King, Mahendra, that led to the dissolution of an elected government led by Koirala in the year 1970 (2017 B.S) compelled him to live a life of a political exile in India for many years while King Mahendra reinstated absolute monarchy in the country.

Koirala was later allowed to return to Nepal on grounds of "national reconciliation" policy that saw no alternative to resolution between political parties and the king to protect national sovereignty and resist foreign interference.

Apart from being the most prominent democratic leader, B.P was a critically acclaimed writer of Nepali fiction and short stories.

Koirala died in the year 1982 after devoting his whole life for democracy in the country. nepalnews.com
