Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala has suggested the party's Central Committee to postpone the Mahasamiti meeting called for November 1-3, this year in Birgunj.

Talking to select NC leaders at his residence Saturday, Maharajgunj, Koirala said a Mahasamiti meeting would not be necessary at a time when the general convention has already been called.

The party's 12th general convention is taking place in February, next year. The CC called a Mahasamiti meeting in November to give final shape to the party's amended statute which has provisions for multi-post leadership and direct election of most of the central committee members before tabling it in the 12th general convention.

Mahasamiti is second most powerful body of the party after the general convention.

Koirala said, it would be difficult logistically and financially to organize two big events in a span of three months. Moreover, the Mahasamiti meeting would not be necessary as the general convention itself could discuss, amend and approve the party statute, he added.

However, some NC leaders have claimed Koirala suggested to postpone the Mahasamiti meeting as he is against the provisions of multi-post leadership in the amended statute and still wants a single-post leadership model in the party.

NC CC is meeting Sunday to discuss issues related to the Mahasamiti meeting and the 12th general convention. nepalnews.com
