Some 10.06 million Nepali citizens have been registered so far for new voter identity cards containing image and biometrics.
Election Commission (EC) officials informed at a news conference on Tuesday that voter registration has completed in 56 out of the 58 municipalities and 3863 VDCs out of the total 3915. The electronic voter ID card will prevent people casting votes with fake ID cards.
The electronic system will ensure that such ID card holders will be able to cast their ballot in only one constituency, acting Chief Election Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti said, informing that some 200,000 citizens living away from their permanent residence have registered their names for the electronic voting card.
The EC has been carrying out voters' registration campaign in all districts, setting up offices in various seventeen places.
Initially, the EC had faced obstructions in its programme by different political and ethnic groups in Terai and some eastern districts. nepalnews.com
