A meeting of the Constitutional Committee (CC) failed to arrive at any agreement with UCPN (Maoist) hardliner faction remaining adamant on incorporating a provision for mandatory military training to citizens above 18 years in the new constitution.

The CC meeting remained inconclusive as lawmakers of the Mohan Baidya faction refused to give up their stance on compulsory military training, Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel  informed media persons after the meeting.

They said they do not agree to the agreement reached at the sub-committee under the CC. Maoist lawmaker Dev Gurung also reiterated the Baidya faction’s insistence on mentioning the Maoist insurgency as ‘people’s war’ in the constitution.

Earlier, the sub-committee led by Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had finalised both the issues, deciding not to go for compulsory military training and the reference of the insurgency as ‘people’s war’. The Baidya faction had opposed the decision at that time too.

Today’s CC meeting was organised to finalise the agreements reached at the sub-committee. nepalnews.com
