The bandh (general strike) jointly called by 13 student unions in the Kathmandu valley has ended from 5 pm on Wednesday after throwing the normal life out of gear.

Various students’ unions demanding withdrawal of government decision to increase the prices of the petroleum products...Traffic has resumed in the city and shops have opened after the withdrawal of the bandh. Earlier, the bandh crippled normal life in the capital Kathmandu and adjoining Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts since early morning as vehicles have stayed off the road and marketplaces and educational institutions remained closed.

Commuters across the city as well as office-goers had a harrowing time reaching their destination as no private or public vehicles are being allowed to ply on the road by protest organisers demonstrating in the street.

The protesting students torched a bus in Chabahil for defying the bandh call. They also vandalised at least a dozen taxis at different places.

The students burned tyres on the roads and staged angry demonstrations at main chowks in the capital. However, no major incidence of violence was reported during the bandh.

Today’s Valley bandh is part of the already announced protest programmes by 13 student unions to exert pressure on the government to withdraw the decision to increase the prices of the petroleum products.

They have said that their protest will not be called back until the government scraps its decision to increase the prices of petrol, diesel, Kerosene and LP Gas. nepalnews.com
